Background check pricing: the $13.99 check is not the whole hiring bill

People Ops Buyer research desk · US · USD employer screening · Updated

Compare US screening prices only after defining the required searches. Certn’s $13.99 Core price and Checkr’s $29.99 Basic price are starting points for different packages, not interchangeable promises. County-search scope, verification work and third-party access fees can change the bill.

Our recommendation: price your role-specific package and a realistic order mix before choosing.

Unit
The published package prices below are per check/report, not monthly employee subscriptions.
Scope
A product called Complete at one supplier need not include the same checks as another.

What do the published prices actually cover?

The following prices were rechecked on 6 October 2026. They are published US screening rates, not negotiated quotes. Certn explicitly lists USD; Checkr's US workforce page publishes starting per-report prices.

Selected package differences; these rows are not equivalent configurations
PackagePublished baseMaterial distinction
Certn US CoreUSD $13.99/checkContingent county searches charged at $9.99 where applicable; additional third-party access fees may apply.
Certn US Complete+USD $79.99/checkIncludes seven-year address-based county scope, OneID, highest education and most-recent employment verification.
Checkr BasicUSD $29.99/report, startingLimited criminal scope; the displayed package does not include the unlimited county search in Essential.
Checkr EssentialUSD $59.99/report, startingIncludes identity verification and unlimited county criminal search; pass-through access fees remain separate.
Checkr CompleteUSD $94.99/report, startingAdds state and federal criminal scope. Employment verification is separately listed among add-ons.

These are selected differences, not full package specifications. A higher price can buy broader criminal coverage; it does not automatically buy the employment or education checks your policy requires.

Define the checks each role requires

We would not send a buyer to the most expensive package by default. Write down the job-specific requirement first, with the employer's responsible screening adviser.

  • Which records? Specify the required criminal-search scope and geographic basis.
  • Which history? Identify employment and education verification needs.
  • Which separate checks? Scope identity, driving or other role-relevant requirements explicitly.
  • Which workflow? Include candidate support, review and the ATS handoff.

Give both suppliers that same specification. A package missing a required component needs an add-on quote; an unnecessary component is not a benefit merely because it is bundled.

A 200-report example: budget the triggered work

This fictional scenario uses Certn's published Core rate and the published $9.99 contingent county-search charge. Assume 200 Core orders and 30 chargeable county searches in the period. The search count is an invented input, not an expected rate for Certn customers.

Illustrative component subtotal, USD
ComponentCalculationSubtotal
Core orders200 × $13.99$2,798.00
Chargeable county searches30 × $9.99$299.70
Known-component total$2,798 + $299.70$3,097.70

This is not an all-in budget. It excludes unquoted third-party access fees, other checks, any applicable taxes and internal work. Obtain those inputs before approving the spend.

With 100 chargeable county searches instead, the same two components total $3,797.00. Count searches, not just candidates: confirm the billing unit and trigger with the supplier. This sensitivity exercise does not establish that Core meets your required screening scope.

“Unlimited county searches” does not mean every outside fee is included

Checkr's pricing footnote separates third-party court and database access fees from package rates, describing them as passed through at cost. Certn also flags possible additional access charges.

A supplier can include its search service in the package while an outside source still charges for access. Ask the supplier to identify the source, unit and trigger on an example invoice.

One clean order

Show the exact base package, billable additions and final invoice lines for an agreed example.

One additional search

Show what triggers extra work, how the buyer sees it and where the price is recorded.

One repeated order

Explain cancellation, restart and duplicate-order billing under the proposed terms.

One verification

Quote the specific employment or education history required, including outside-source charges.

Use a sample invoice or authorised fictional test case. These are procurement questions, not claims that every supplier charges every item.

Compare supplier fees and the work left with HR

For occasional straightforward orders, transparent self-service packaging can reduce buying effort. For varied roles or recurring volume, ask for a written package matrix and commercial proposal. Neither approach proves service quality.

Keep two totals: supplier cash charges and internal operating effort. For example, a fictional 15 minutes of chasing across 40 orders is ten hours of HR capacity. Do not claim a vendor eliminates it until a trial demonstrates that improvement.

Do not rank prices until the required searches and access fees are included. Once equivalent configurations are priced, use our turnaround and ATS acceptance guide to test whether the service works when an order is delayed.

Questions buyers ask

How much does a US employee background check cost?

The answer depends on the required searches and triggered charges. Selected published bases here range from Certn Core at $13.99 to Checkr Complete starting at $94.99, but these are different scopes, not a market-wide range or an all-in quote.

Is Certn $13.99 a monthly subscription?

The US pricing page lists that amount for the Core Criminal Check package. It should not be modelled as a monthly employee software seat. Conditional county searches and access fees can add cost.

Are Certn Complete+ and Checkr Complete equivalent?

No. Their displayed scopes differ: Certn Complete+ includes specified education and employment verification, while Checkr Complete expands criminal-search scope and lists employment verification separately. Compare the exact required package.

Does unlimited county coverage eliminate pass-through fees?

Not on Checkr’s displayed pricing terms. County search inclusion and third-party access charges are separate concepts. Ask for the applicable itemised charges.

Which supplier is cheaper?

No equivalent scoped quotes were obtained here. The guide explains published package differences and a conditional subtotal; it does not declare an overall price winner.
