The brief: stores, shifts and no dependable work inbox

This shortlist assumes 500 UK retail employees across stores and a small head office. Some have no company email; managers need clear guidance after difficult workplace events. These are buying assumptions, not observations from a provider trial.

The order reflects our invitation priority for that brief. It does not rank clinical outcomes, waiting times or value for every employer. We inspected primary material on 2 October 2026 and have not used these services as patients or tested their helplines.

1. PAM Wellness: phone, text and accessible contact options

PAM publishes phone, live chat, email, online and callback routes, alongside translation, Relay and British Sign Language arrangements.

Our buying test: ask the supplier to demonstrate registration, eligibility and each required accessibility route. Confirm hours and response standards separately for each channel. We would not accept a list of channels as proof that all offer the same service at all times.

2. HealthHero: choose the package before comparing the price

HealthHero’s package table separates digital Essentials from EAP Core: Essentials excludes the 24/7 in-the-moment counselling phone line and legal/financial guidance. Core includes those services. Live chat is marked as coming soon.

The structured-counselling footnote describes typically six or eight sessions per referral, limited to one referral per user in a rolling 12-month period. Ask which allowance applies to the proposed package.

Our buying test: request one written service schedule and quote. The table and FAQ use different employee counts for their starting-price examples; neither is a quote for this 500-person brief. We would exclude Essentials if a counselling phone line is mandatory.

3. Retail Trust: support for retail staff and managers

Retail Trust’s employer programme combines support services with engagement activity and manager training. Its published offer includes a helpline, counselling, critical-incident support and practical assistance.

Consider it if you want retail-specific manager training alongside employee support. We have not compared clinical outcomes.

Our buying test: obtain the partnership scope for your organisation: eligibility, included services, incident arrangements and training allocation. Do not assume charitable assistance, another retailer’s package or every advertised service becomes an unrestricted contractual entitlement.

4. Wisdom Wellbeing: compare the five-year commitment

Wisdom’s published starting rate assumes at least 100 employees and a 60-month term, plus VAT. That is useful commercial context, but not a like-for-like comparison with a one-year bid.

Our buying test: compare identical scope and term options, including the structured-session model and extras. Our EAP contract-cost guide shows the arithmetic. Move this option up when the service fits and the longer commitment is deliberate; do not buy five years merely to win a monthly-price comparison.

5. Workplace Options: support across several countries

Workplace Options describes emotional and practical support for workers and families internationally. We would include it when the UK stores sit inside a broader country rollout.

Our buying test: require a UK-specific service schedule and country-by-country exceptions for the rest of the workforce. Global availability is not evidence of identical access, sessions or family eligibility everywhere. For a UK-only purchase, compare the UK services and price with the other finalists.

6. TELUS Health: EAP with other wellbeing services

TELUS Health’s UK portfolio spans EAP services, digital resources and additional wellbeing offerings. Compare it if you want EAP support and other wellbeing services in one purchase.

Our buying test: name the exact product, login route and included services in the proposal. Then demonstrate the worker journey without a company inbox. Ask for the EAP-only cost if you will not use the other services.

7. Bupa: check who pays for care beyond the EAP

Bupa’s EAP page describes phone, online and face-to-face support. Its treatment footnote distinguishes signposting or insurance referral from specialist arrangements funded by the employer when treatment is outside the policy.

Our buying test: confirm which extra treatment the employer pays for, who approves it and what employees will be told. A referral does not mean treatment is included.

Use one demonstration brief for all seven

Give suppliers these fictional administrative scenarios. Ask for a demonstration with test accounts; do not make fake clinical calls.

  1. The new starter: a store employee has no work email. Show how they find the service and establish eligibility without explaining a personal issue to their manager.
  2. The late shift: separate immediate contact, assessment and a booked appointment. Record the proposed standard for each.
  3. The access requirement: demonstrate the required language or accessibility route, including booking and any limits.
  4. The store incident: distinguish an individual benefit from a manager-commissioned response, including authorisation and extra charges.
  5. The management report: use a fictional sample to show distinct users, contacts and reporting periods. Explain small-group suppression without exposing individual records.

Our decision rule: reduce the seven to two after this exercise. Ask those two for contract-ready scope and pricing.

Questions buyers ask

Which EAP providers would you shortlist for a UK retailer?

For the stated 500-person retail brief, our first invitations are PAM Wellness, HealthHero and Retail Trust. The final choice depends on demonstrated access, exact service scope and contract terms—not a clinical quality ranking.

Why include Retail Trust in the top three?

Its retail employer programme and manager support are directly relevant to the brief. The placement is conditional on the proposed partnership meeting the employer’s eligibility, service and price requirements.

Is the cheapest advertised EAP tier enough?

Check the exact package. HealthHero’s digital Essentials tier excludes the counselling phone line included in Core. Different services and contract terms cannot be compared on monthly price alone.
